about

In 2013, Keenan and longtime friend/collaborator Ben Yonda released ‘Broken Brothers’, a 6-song split EP. It features 3 tracks apiece, each representing some lost tracks from the artist’s catalogs. ‘Take Me With You’ details what it is like to be left behind, and longing to venture where you know you don’t belong. ‘I Watched You Disappear’ is a long goodbye, where a friendship slowly turns into “steam pouring from the grate”.

about

Brian Keenan Brooklyn, New York

Brian Keenan is a man of many words – a prolific songwriter and musician from Brooklyn, NY. As frontman for Proud Simon, Brian led a ten year musical journey through classic country, fuzzed psychedelia, and horn drenched pop balladry. His debut solo album "Today This Year" was a rebirth of the concept, intertwining the high lonesome country sound with an electronic pulse. ... more

Track Name: Ben Yonda - Paper Match
the bedroom blinds hang vertical,
where holding hands read the personals,
you're the finish line with no laurel,
with no victory to taste,

just the paper match and the tv stand,
thin coat of dust on the mannequins,
and the summer dress you left hanging in,
oh the place we used to kiss,

now it's getting hot here on this sandy shore,
wish you'd need me less and want me more,
and the sunburned skin at the hotel door,
but you won't let him in,

and they found their own idea of home,
when they say they don't need ya anymore,
their own idea of home,

so it's gray ones down with the sidewalk girls,
spinning heads around bicycles,
cut their necklines in the motion blur,
no i wasn't far from it,

and you're smudging lines blind across your phone,
making star maps for the miserable,
got four hundred friends and a quiet phone,
to keep you up at night,

and they found their own idea of home,
when they say they don't need ya anymore,
their own idea of home,

left the room scraping for words,
flick the switch, let the bulbs get warm,
and he'd miss you more as an afterthought,
so we're down to this,

sing major chords, see colors bleed,
kiss the lips, part the zipper's teeth,
and i'll take my hours with me when i leave,
set their memories free,

and they found their own idea of home,
when they say they don't need ya anymore,
their own idea of home.
Track Name: Brian Keenan - Take Me With You
Take me with you
I'll break in two
One half to wear around your neck
The other to come home to

Take me with you
I'm afraid of what you will do
We're on the verge of something good
I wanna see it all the way through

There was a time
You cried at the news
There was a time
I tried to keep it from you

Take me with you
I'm government issue
There's a war outside these doors
I don't think you know what you're getting into

Take me with you
Just in case you continue
Drinking in the city's sin
And roaming like a lion on the loose
Track Name: Ben Yonda - Daydream
he takes two it makes the lights go out,
a mis-sent melody goes dropping down,
we never were much for the prowl,
leave me sweating and unseen,
the pitch black, the madness and the meant-to-bes,
we'll hang lifeless in the daydream,
and don't you wake me,

don't trust your mouth,
that's not something you'd say,
and tomorrow you'll wake powder fresh and not afraid,
no more talking blues, halogen lights,
the stolen hand i caught between the cage and flight,

and i hoped it would hurt so much more,
and cut me down, with the broken and the bold,
but you better get to know,
hold your breath and move real slow,
forget you name, but tell me,
if we're getting close,
and it hurts so much more.

he trades the tree for the splinter,
a bit of blood and bathe me in the words,
just take a full spin, and forget her,
and let me walk in place,
spare the me second hand, spare me the month of may,
did you hope i'd look the same?
the memory fades,

don't trust your mouth,
that's not something you'd say,
and tomorrow you'll wake powder fresh and not afraid,
no more talking blues, halogen lights,
the stolen hand i caught between the cage and flight,

and i hoped it would hurt so much more,
and cut me down, with the broken and the bold,
but you better get to know,
hold your breath and move real slow,
forget you name, but tell me,
if we're getting close,
and it hurts so much more.
Track Name: Brian Keenan - I Watched You Disappear
It hasn't been the same
Since the time you went away
There's gotta be another day to reclaim
The steam pouring from the grate
The parking lot empty
It's the smell of gasoline I crave

So many times over the years
I watched you disappear
I watched you disappear
Into some big idea
I watched you disappear

The battleship sank
To the bottom of the lake
Water washed away the paint
I don't know what to say
Every time they ask me
It must be Mercury Retrograde

So many times over the years
I watched you disappear
I watched you disappear
Into some big idea
I watched you disappear

I know how it seems
That we're making our own misery
That's alright with me
FIrst to show
And the last to leave
Track Name: Ben Yonda - The Lovely and the Lessened
this voice only speaks when it's poisoned.
only finds out in the morning,
it's just a pale little light.
you leave with the lovely and the lessened,
only stays when you let them,
only knows what you like.

'don't go', says the cold arms to the floorboards,
i need ya just a bit more,
i can't tell you why.
so still, the joyful barely moving.
who thought we'd ever choose this.
can't say we never tried

that's when your legs broke free
the cacophony,
of sawtooth waves and linen sheets,
a winter's remedy,
straight lines go circling,
i was a boy, you kept me clean
attack and release,
come now my chemical relief,
i was your boy, you kept me clean.
Track Name: Brian Keenan - Dark Place on the Map
Circling the old neighborhood
As the winter days are growing shorter
Just like my mind, they couldn't decide
Whether to stay, to rain, to sleep, or to defy

Hammer in hand, prying open the paint cans
Reluctantly breaking up a house of glass

A dark place on the map
A dark place on the map

Visions of how it used to be
Capone's poets up there on the balcony
Wandering and waiting patiently
Through fireworks, cursive words and smoke rings

Standing there in my old place under the overpass
Hung some Christmas lights, a horseshoe and an American flag

A dark place on the map
A dark place on the map

Hanging down at the Lady of Snows
With the beggars, the borrowers in yesterday's clothes
Taking tickets from the windshields as we walked
And staying up all around the clock

The waitress handed us a tarot deck
Oh, how the years have gone
And how quick they went

A dark place on the map
A dark place on the map
